Flux Capacitor Origins

I've just finished watching the 2nd season of Warehouse 13.
And it has revealed some very disturbing information I did not know previously.

It would appear Doc Brown was not the first to invent or use the Flux Capacitor for time travel.

H.G. Wells invented it the 1800s for the same reason.

So Im at a loss here and want some answers.
This cant be true!
Did Doc really just slip and hit his head for the idea, or was there something else going on?
