I thought the term "mate" is applicable to either gender ... like classmate or teammate .

Anyway, what is the feminine form of mate then ?

I agree, mate is not gender specific.

People seem to call me guy all the time? I too referred to Jan as a he, long ago it seems now. The whole bro, dude thing is a bit too abused in my opinion. It should be reserved for a friend, or at least long time acquaintance. I do like mate, it's more friendly, and not so common in the US. But since we are international here, it seems more appropriate.

In Australia, "mate" is strictly a male thing....I'm not sure there is a femine equivalent? Jan?

In New Zealand, "Bro" is widely used as in "Sweet as Bro" meaning "awesome"

Sweet as Bro... - "Sweet as": Second most common phrase in New Zealand after "awesome". Said when someting is rather good instead of just "good" or "OK". Often followed by "bro". - WorldNomads Adventures
