Hi all
W8 is alive and kicking -- I'm typing this on the W8 developer preview edition --available for download from the MS site.
After W8 there will definitely be some sort of Windows available for Tablets, Smartphones and possibleysome devices we haven't even though of -- for example the new breed of Internet Radios that are appearing could benefit with some type of slightly easier user interface for accessing individual Radio URL streams rather than "pre-canned" servers.
The name Windows will surely be kept however since this essentially describes MS - even though MS like IBM is moving quite largely into the consultancy area and supplying consultants who provide services for other products than purely Microsoft -- such as SAP for example.
Cheers

Take a look an W8's Metero interface and the latest XBOX 360 skin, and then see if you can truthfully say that elements can't be interchanged.
The only hiccup i can see is gaming, which can be solved by either only having XBOX hardware be compatible with the XBOX gaming, or require manufacturers to meet system requirements in order to have their computers XBOX games compliant.
The latter will usher in the era of multiple companies making XBOX consoles, allowing Microsoft to take over the gaming world. Microsoft would probably have to predefine tiers of performance or something, to make it easier to see what is required to run the latest games.
Think of it this way:
Tier 0: not classified as a XBOX game/console. Tier 0 game are essentially identical to current PC games, but will work on a system only if the system meets the minimum requirements for that specific game. Tier 0 games should work on all Tier 1 and above systems
Tier 1: Minimum system requirements required to be classified as an XBOX console. all games made for Tier 1 will work on Tier 1 systems and above
Tier 2: allows for better performance that Tier 1. Tier 2 games take advantage of the performance increases in Tier 2 and will not work on Tier 1, but will work on Tier 2 and above.
Tier 3: Console more powerful then Tier 2, games need Tier 3 and above.
And so on.
Gaming enthusiasts can build their own consoles, and can upgrade components in order to make it compatible with higher tier games as time goes on.

Mary Jo Foley is a big-time tech writer on ZDNet, and she recently gave a report on Windows 9. She not only expects there to actually be a Windows 9, but she expects at least two more Windows OSes after that. Huh?
There had been speculation that Windows 8 would be the last Windows OS. MS has already started its own cloud computing OS, and if properly developed it will make security much easier for MS. Right now it is free, but in the future you would pay a yearly rental fee. MS would upgrade as they see fit and they would keep the system loaded with updated anti-malware.
But Ms. Foley says that MS is making to much money selling Windows and is increasing the sale of licenses to write software that will work with Windows. | My System Specs | | OS Windows 7 Home Basic, 64 bit CPU dual core, Athlon 2; 3.4 gigahertz Memory 4 gigabytes Graphics Card ATI Radeon HD 5400 Series Sound Card AMD High Definitin Audio Device Monitor(s) Displays Generic PnP Monitor Keyboard Standard PS/2 Keyboard Hard Drives ST350041 3AS SCSI Disk Device Other Info Assembled in a Mexican computer store |
