    Well done Forums 11 / 11 / 11 Remberance Day

    Hi Forum

Just to say after all the Nonsense FIFA had with allowing the English (and Welsh / Scottish) Football associations had in their dispute over whether they should be allowed to commemorate fallen war heroes and comrades by showing the Poppy symbol on their shirts I'm glad to see the Forum carrying the symbol.

It's NEVER been a political symbol -- it's to remember war dead and let's hope these sort of days remind EVERYONE what a nasty business war is and as a great past English politician once said "Jaw Jaw is always better than "War War".

For anybody who wants to know why the Poppy was used -- in the mud of parts of N France and Flanders in WWI where much horrendous killing took place it was the only plant that readily grew so was chosen as a reminder.

    Thanks and much appreciated

I agree entirely Jimbo and I'd like to give a big thank you to John for posting a poppy on WSF's home page - a nice and much appreciated gesture.

the poppy seed lay dormant in the fields of France, and grew after the ground had been churned up by the shelling and trench digging etc.,

the poppy is a symbol of hope.

Thank you for including the poppy at the top of the home page today in remembrance of all Allied Veterans.

    In Flanders Fields
By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918)
Canadian Army In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
    In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
    In Flanders fields.

As a veteran Memorial Day means a little more to me than it seems to mean to some. I agree with the "class act" statements and thank all who remember just what this day stands for. As an aside ...... how many know that W.W.1 was the deadliest conflict for SOLDIERS ever.

While in Germany serving in the Army, I visited a few "Flanders Fields" cemeteries and the rows upon rows upon rows of markers was a very sobering experience.
