A trick I've been using is to not revisit the thread as soon as I get a notification. I'll leave the email notification in my inbox for a while, then catch up on the whole works in one shot. It's not reading the posts that gets to be troublesome time-wise, but the numerous revisits to the page. Before I did this it seemed like a constant cycle of email>>click>>read, new email>>click>>read, etc etc etc.
My solution to lots of emails is to turn on notifications for the topics that get too many new message notifications. works for me.
