Poll - Star Wars or Star Trek?

So, there seems to be a debate between Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia of Star Wars) and William Shatner (Jame T. Kirk of Star Trek) on which was the better franchise...

Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) took to video to refute William Shatner’s claim that "Trek" was the better franchise.

In an ongoing debate far more interesting than anything coming from the Republican presidential candidates, Carrie Fisher hotly rebuffed William Shatner’s assertions that “Star Trek” is way better than “Star Wars.” “First of all," the former Captain James Tiberius Kirk spewed in a recent interview, "‘Star Wars’ is derivative of ‘Star Trek’ by what…10, 15, 20 years? DERIVATIVE!” The bellicose Shatner continued. “’Star Trek’ had relationships and conflict among the relationships, and stories that involved humanity and philosophical questions,” he said in the video chat that he tweeted to his fans. “’Star Wars’ was special effects!”

So??? Simple question - Which franchise was better..... Star Trek or Star Wars?

For me Star Trek. As a Kid I loved this opening dialogue....

    Space: The final frontier
These are the voyages of the Starship, Enterprise
    Its 5 year mission
    To explore strange new worlds
To seek out new life and new civilizations
To boldly go where no man has gone before
duh da dum, duh duh duh da dum.....

As child that statement evoked imagination of traveling all across the universe meeting new forms of life. Commanding a space ship in meeting adventures head on.

Kirk, Spark, McCoy and crew certainly gave us "Trekies" plenty of adventures, stories, and moral dilemmas to think about during the hour long episodes on TV. Then came the blockbuster movies... Loved them all.

Anyway for me the choice is easy....

    I don;t think I can vote...

Star Trek and Star wars both encompassed periods of my mid childhood where the imaginative fantasy aspect of it REALLY fueld your imagination. SO on that they were equal. (Most my start trek was on re-runs, was bit too young the first round)

Star Trek really did have good sci-fi stories and Shatner is right that it emplored all sorts of humanity subjects with hour long drama plays. That was it's strength and what mate it so compelling. Star trek wins there on a philosopical level. Star Wars was just cowboys in space, one (maybe one and a half) dimentional characters.

Star wars though... yes it was all special effects, but those special effects AND some of the cowboynes of it really put you into the movie. And it completely changed everything around you inside the theater and out. NO movie has ever (in my lifetime) come anywhere near close to creating the insane movie hysteria and "culture" change that the original Star Wars movie did. It was all eye candy but what a massive, out of nowhere gob stopping eye candy it was.
