I want to search thread titles that have both the words WINDOWS and WRITER, I have tried different combinations such as
windows+writer
windows, writer
windows&writer
but I am not getting the results with both words in the thread title.
any tips.

I haven't fiddled with it. Have you tried WINDOWS and WRITER?
just did does not work
you could use a different program i suggest "sadman software search" it has dual word searching, and it can search within files
Try searching this way:
"windows writer" and
"windows" AND "writer"
Also, as smarteyeball suggested, refine your search to, for example, search specific threads, or search "show posts" instead of "show threads."

Just in case you didn't notice we have two search functions on the site:-
- Standard vbulletin search - this has advanced search options but constantly gives very poor results (not worth using IMO).
- Google custom search - gives great results but doesn't have the advance thread title searching options (not really needed anyway).
