if you don't want it I want it that is a sweet as machine even if doesn't run linux

just a thought most games are for windows so if you are not playing a game then really linux does not really need that POWERFULL of a laptop, in my case works good on any average pc

another thought have tried installing inside windows like WUBI I'm currently using linuxmint 12 with it own brand of WUBI called mint4win, if it does work then do try linuxmint 12 it is really good in my experience

"The Windows-based Ubuntu Installer (Wubi) allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu from within Microsoft Windows. It lets a Microsoft Windows user try Ubuntu without risking any data loss due to disk formatting or partitioning.

Wubi requires Windows 98, 2000, XP, Vista, or Windows 7.

NOTE: Hibernation is not supported when installing Ubuntu via Wubi.
"

PS: as windows fans my not like me mentioning linux I will say that I use windows 7 as my default

I think the "buyer" does not understand the problem. It is not a matter of installing Linux, it is a matter of running live CDs that mostely run under some mini distro of Linux.

WHS is it impossible to load ANY bootable disc? Including the Windows install disc? I'm not sure exactly what is happening when you try to load the various discs, but have you considered that it might be a possible BIOS issue?

You can load the programs from disc, but then the cursor is frozen if it is a Linux base. Windows7 base discs work.

I think the problem is that the hardware is designed such that it requires a specific Win7 touchpad driver and does not work with generic drivers. Poor hardware design I would say.

And the techs at Sony said that this is the only series of their PCs that does it. With their other PC series the live CDs work. The even tried the CDs I mailed in. Go figure.

Do you not have a regular usb mouse you can use? When ever I load up a linux CD my wireless mouse works automatically. I only ask because you mention the touchpad driver.

I tried both, the touchpad and a wired mouse. No deal with both.

Just thought I would ask. Sometimes we (that is to say smart people that know a lot about computers) overlook the obvious, especially when frsutrated.

Update: Sony just called and told me that they would refund my money. I guess that was easier for them than fixing the BIOS.

But now I have to find a replacement. If you see something, let me know. Here are the essential features that I need.

Backlit keyboard - must have (because I use it for classes in a dark room under the projector)
HD monitor - must have (because I do not see well)
decent graphics - - probably comes with the HD screen (I do not play games)
A better processor (the Sony had an i7)
USB3 and/or eSata port (the Sony had both) - if it has only one, I can supplement with a PCI Express card

So keep your eyes peeled and if you see a suitable model, let me know. Price range up to $1000
