The only way that I know of to save or set any image that has unwanted elements is to follow Sue's method, but it will need to have an extra step preformed in order to set it as a background.
You would have to follow one of Brink's tutorials that I will place at the end of each set of instructions.

I will start with IE as Sue's instruction calls for "Save background as..."

To save the image of the day without the Search Bar in IE8:

    • Right click on image, select Save Background As...
    • A Save As...Box opens, and you could then save the image where ever you liked.

Then follow: Desktop Background - Change

    Our FireFox acted differently:

    • Right click on image.
    • Left click on image scroll down, and select View Background Image.
    • Depending on your Browser settings; it may or may not open in a new Tab/Window, ours did.
    • Left click on image, select Save Image As... From here you can save it where ever you like.

Then follow: Desktop Background - Change

Result of either Browser method using Brink's tutorial:

For Sue. You would need to use a video downloader program or an add-on for your browser.

    Suggestions:
    http://download.cnet.com/windows/video-players

Add-ons for IE as you might imagine are a little hard to find, here is one:
Ant Video Downloader for Internet Explorer - Ant.com

    Add-ons for FF:
Search Results for "Save Videos" | FireFox | platform=windows
This one seems popular for FF: Video DownloadHelper 4.9.8
Great info, Steve. Wish I could give you a Rep+ for that, cause you deserve it!

Sorry Joan, I guess Bing cares more for the 'function' than the 'aesthetics' --- but I actually do save some of the photos and use them as occasional backgrounds because some of them are really gorgeous.

Still can't figure out how to save the ones with MOVING elements though. Anyone have any idea how to do that?????

Can you describe how, and with what browser you are trying?

Can you post several links to the animations you are trying to save?

Joan, Sue, look what I found, released on Tuesday.

Darn, Joan...Looking further it is available only for the United States
There is a python script here: https://ubuntuincident.wordpress.com/2012/04/05/set-bing-images-as-your-wallpaper//

One of the latest applications that Windows users can download on their computers to benefit from advanced personalization options is Bing Desktop, which was just released in beta.

The application was meant to put the Bing homepage on the users' desktop, providing them with both fast access to search on the web, and with a brand new background each day.

The software will provide a Bing search bar on the computer’s homescreen, putting the web page only one click away. It can be pinned to the top of the screen, and will auto-hide when not in use.

It can be positioned in the center of the screen as well, and features the “Windows + H” hotkey for fast access.

“You'll get future updates to Bing Desktop and other Microsoft products from Microsoft Update. This software may also download and install some updates automatically.”

    Bing Desktop weighs 1.4MB
