There are a lot more than you may think. A lot of the cheaper DVDs on the market are for movies that are in the public domain. I have bought a bunch of them, only later to find that I could have had them for free. The copyright notice on those types of DVDs only relates to copying the movie from that DVD, not the movie itself. If I recall correctly, any movie released prior to ...I think, 1963 is public domain, unless the owners of the movie applied to an extension. In my judgement, most of the best classic movies were released prior to 1963.

This is all very interesting, but I think were off topic. Is there a previously created thread on this site where this subject is debated? Or we could create one. This morning, I've been reading through many websites on the subject of what movies are or are not legal to stream or download and make copies of. The subject in it's entirety is most complicated! Here are links to just three of the many sites I read through. Still my findings indicate there are not many movies available in the public domain. The interested members of this subject, should discuss it futher, but elsewhere.

I do not debate, only discuss. However, I will say that list of PD movies doesn't even scratch the surface.

OK, discuss, rather than debate...agreed. Perhaps, then you will provide a link to these 200,000 public domain (free) movies.

I never said that there were 200,000 PDs. I said that the software in question says that it will work with 200,000 websites that offer .flv videos. I also said that it only lists ~ 4500 of them, so it would not be possible to provide a list such as you requested.

Seekermeister, I think your bit of info was useful for me:)
You may need to be careful with remastered videos which bring the old classics back to life.

I don't think that remastering would revive the original copyright, but it may create a new one. If that is so, then copying the movie would not be illegal, but copying it from the DVD would be. Frequently the original footage of a movie is available, but may not be terribly easy to find. If I understand, remastering may involve two factors, digitizing the images, and possibly updating the audio to a more advanced format. It would depend on the movie, but personally I would prefer to have it as it was originally anyway...assuming that it is not beyond hope.

This tread is for the "Best Classic Films You Have Watched", not for discussion of copyright laws.

    True.
I think comment on remastered classics is relevant - want do you think?
The remastered African Queen was a superb job as was North by Northwest.
