Father of Commodore 64 Passes Away at Age 83

It was big news when Apple co-founder Steve Jobs passed away, but how many people have heard of Jack Tramiel? Outside of tech circles, the answer is probably 'not many' and that's because Tramiel preferred to avoid the spotlight. At one time a taxi driver and an Auschwitz concentration camp survivor, Tramiel founded the company that built the Commodore 64, only best selling PC of all time and an iconic piece of computing history. Sadly, Tramiel died on Sunday, April 8 at age 83.

Thanks Shawn, I'd never heard of him either. I never had or used a Commodore 64 but I'd seen one as the family I did some baby sitting for had one for their kids.

Very sad news, he was a good age though.

The ole Commodore 64 isn't anything compared to today's systems, but it sure was great in it's day. All these great innovators and trend setters will be missed.

the world is a poorer place after losing this remarkable guy.

i've never had a commodore 64, but i did use to play with my brother's vic-20 a lot - a great piece of kit in its day, that still looks cool thirty years later.

At the time the Commodore 64 was released I hadn't got any enthusiasm for computers then, but a workmate of mine was nuts about programming and was on his computer every chance he could get.

I became his best buddy when I covered his breakdown calls while he tapped away at the Commodore keyboard.

I'd never heard of Jack Tramiel, but I think the computing world owes him a lot.
