Ten cities in the UK to get “ultrafast” broadband

Ten of the biggest cities in the UK will have access to “ultrafast” broadband of at least 80Mbps by 2015.

Networks will be deployed in the cities of Belfast, Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, London, Manchester and Newcastle, the British chancellor George Osborne announced in his budget speech today.

It's a bit of a joke considering most of those cities have large chunks that can already get 100+Mbps, the money should have gone to the places that are still suffering on sub 20Mbps speeds.

I agree. Broadband needs to be improved in the uk significantly is some areas. The issue I have is that there is such variations in speed in a small area. For example, I get 3mp/s as my phone line can't support me and I'm not in a fibre area. My friend who lives 200m away around the corner gets 100mp/s fibre optic. My nan and grandad who are a 10 mins drive away get 15mp/s with the phone line. It's all rather annoying!

Where I live if I lived on the other side of the road in an even numbered house I could get 100 meg cable, but as they never did this side of the road I have to settle for 2x18 meg bonded lines

Still better than me!! At 3mp/s (which equates to about 250KB/s down), everything takes an age to download!

2MB/s is the most I can get with no sign of fibre optics on the horizon.

And this is on a modern development no more than ten years old.

These politicians should realise that the internet is essential in driving the world's economy these days and get everywhere hooked up to a system with decent speed and no throttling at peak times.

Can't get Cable at all where I am, They decided to limit the installation to give the likes of Sky a "fair chance", with TV, and the net of course suffers with it.

This doesn't of course stop Sky selling their products in a Cabled area

well im slightly dissapointed atm, after an hour of 100 mB dl speed optics being installed this is my current speed, im hoping it will improve, or else they can have it back, im now achieving a speed i was supposed to with a copper wire connection previously.
will keep this updated as it improves ( hopefully)

    Edit : two hours later

edit 2 the first speedtest pic i posted was from the hardwired from router to desktop. the second pic is from the laptop wireless conection.
i rechecked the desktop and the speed is still 6 meg dl .
i phoned BT and they tell me there is a known issue with the homehub 3 type A and i need the homehub type B as type A caps the bandwidth.
they are sending a replacement hub and i have to wait until tuesday for that to arrive.
    bugger.
ah well i still have a fast lappy connection .
so i shall update again after the new hub arrives.
anyone else who is considering BT infinity then make sure you have the correct hub.
