I have both also. Actually, when I say "I have both", I mean that the lappy is only mine when the missus or one of the grandchildren are using it and something goes wrong.

'Big Box' is connected to a 24" Lyama monitor, have to readjust eyesight when allowed to return to the lappy!

But both have their place and I have always loved our 17" HP Pavilion DV7, at least since I removed all the krap HP software.

I've only ever used a desktop, but it would be nice sometimes to have the portability of a laptop, hubby's been on about it but getting one is a different matter. I've told him I don't think he'd be able to manage one because of the screen size and the keyboard.

I use both, but admittedly, the desktop (dumpster special running Ubuntu) is used mainly for streaming audio.

I need my big screens and use the laptop only for classes at the computer club - but there I sit such that I can read things from the big projected screen.

I hate to deal with the wife's laptops - which she loves. But I sometimes have to bail them out. Then I use the magnifier.

Why would you have a problem, Joan? Do you have a disability or vision problem? (I have disabilities, both wife and self have failing eyesight.)

Our lappy has a 17" widescreen and under Win7 there are ways to minimise vision and other accessibility problems. Try <Control Panel> <Ease of Access Centre> and there are many tools to help with this.

If you use a lappy mainly at home, you could also connect a separate monitor. Keyboards are usually OK, except for the smaller Netbooks. I would suggest a visit to a large computer reseller, just to try out the models there. Note down the model best suited to you, then buy cheaper online. (Cheeky, I know, but works!)

    EDIT:
Just noticed where you live. We have spent many happy holidays in West Wales, what a beautiful place to live.

Hubby's eyes are worse than mine so I know he'd have problems plus the keyboards on Laptops would present a problem for him. I know you can add a monitor or keyboard but then you're taking away the portability, which is after all the benefit of a laptop.

Although the main drawback at present is cost, he's only just had his machine, well late last year, so there's no way we can afford to buy another yet.

I agree it is nice living down here, so peaceful away from the madding crowd.

    horses for courses.

i use my desktop when i'm at my desk, as it's got quite a bit of 'oomph', large screen, mouse and keyboard.

i use my laptop when i'm out-and-about, or in bed.

(and then i use my android smartphone anywhere and everywhere.)

I use my Smartphone if I'm at the other end of the bungalow or I've shut down the computer, but so far only to check Facebook or Sevenforums or my mail.
