In the USA, contracts and pricing of android and iPhone are the same for the base model iPhone.
$200 and 2 year contract.
Some android phones are $300 and $400 with 2 year contracts.
Initial price of the phone shouldn't be a detractor since it isnt that much over 2 years.
The plan itself can be well over $2400 over the 2 years.

Warranty is actually cheaper on the iPhone through apple than it is for an android phone through Verizon.
$100 for 2 years with up to 2 damage claims with a $50 deductible.
Verizon is $8 month with $100 deductible for most android phones.

Asking a question such as this is inviting user bias. I think your best bet would be to read reviews around the net. There are a huge number of reviews and most of them are largely unbiased(reputable sites would be a good choice, not john doe's blog). Be sure they read specific phone reviews, not Android vs. iOS: pick the models they are most interested in and have them read reviews. Most smartphones (in US at least) require a 2 year contract, don't want to get stuck with a piece of hardware you hate for that long!

I meant no offense to anyone who offered advice in this thread, this is just my opinion.

i think the review was biased toward android really, you can't compare one phone to a variety of android phones, android is an OS, and many android phones have different specs, whereas, iOS is an OS designed for certain hardware, what you're doing is comparing one computer from one company to every other computer with windows, which will always flow in the direction of the amount rather than the quality, and yes, i'm an iPhone user.

No smartphone requires a 2 year contract.
Getting the smartphone subsidized from a carrier requires a contract.

Absolutely true, I made the assumption that the OP's friend was going to be purchasing the sub phone from a carrier. Unlocked phones are widely available

Where to find Unbiased Software Reviews?
I was wondering if anyone could suggest a good site (unbiased) for software reviews. I have Google'd many software reviews and I have become suspicious that they are mostly biased. I understand that if a software company is spending money with your site (advertising or whatever) you can't tick them...

Hi all I think anybody who'se interested in security should at least read some of the papers from this site. About.com: http://www.av-test.org/ Also have a read of this http://www.virusbtn.com/news/2008/09_02 And another -- although in Dutch the table is clear enough
