    well its finally over ,
next stop Rio, i cant help thinking the beach volleyball will be spectacular

i thought the miming at the closing ceremony was hilarious.

overall it was another amazing feat , and an eclectic representation of Britain music over the years.
looks like they sidestepped the punk era though.

Worst games ever for my native Finland. One silver and one bronze in ladies sailing, one bronze in men's javelin. So, we Finns are comforting us with all time statistics:

unlucky Kari, its not the winning that counts its the taking part.

Britain enjoyed taking part too, the medals were just a bonus

    Come come boohbah,
Of course it's about winning, that's what competitive sport is all about. That in noway takes anything away from all the competitors who work so hard just to get near to taking part but I be everyone of them secretly dreams of winning gold. "TIC"

BBC News - Team GB cover Queen's Don't Stop Me Now

I think it might have been a little like VE day for those at the venues - far too young to remember such an event - but I might actually have been to the 1948 games since I did live in London at the time and was born just as the war ended!

Well surprised at how well everything went including no terrorist attacks and no strikes!

I remember VE and VJ days very well and whilst the atmosphere at the main venue of the Olympics was undoudedly electric nothing in my book will ever be able to beat the VE day feeling! I lived in North London en route to the London Docks from the EastAnglian bomber flight path and we either got the "dropped too early bombs" or the "way back ones". We were also very close to a HAA gun battery complete with searchlights so these were a target for the dive bombers.

One can imagine the relief after so many years of war and bombing and of course the big difference was that so many people lost so many of their friends and loved ones so it must have been a mixture of elation and sorrow. My parents lived in London thoughout the war and my dad was a firefighter - he rarely spoke about his experiences.

Coming out with a Silver or Bronze in a ax fighting contest doesn't sound all the well to me. I think Gold is the one everybody is trying for. It's how you play the game is what the people that lost keep saying.

How true, when you consider that one of the original competitive sports was Gladiator fighting you could hardly sayto the chap laying in the dust with his head chopped off "It doesn't matter in you didn't win, it's the taking part that matters"
