The old grid.... underground power lines are smarter than above ground power lines, but they present problems as well.

Florida is mostly sand, in bedrock areas, shifts can snap the lines. Low lying areas have water risks...

Anyway, Tesla might have been on the right track - transmitting electricity. too bad he simply invented the radio although Marconi gets popular credit.
[QUOTE=whs;2155634I wish they would put those power lines under ground. In Florida where my house is we have underground power lines. A few years ago when we had a force1 hurricane passing we never lost power.[/QUOTE]

Jack, I think you may be a little dis-oriented.

If you look at this map, North is up towards Harrisburg. East is to the right towards Philly, Down or South (Rt15) is towards Fredrick, MD about an hour away:

Hurricane Tracking 2012-fireberd.jpg

Number 1 arrow is the raceway with Grantham 2miles? to the East.
The Post Office grouped smaller towns into the larger towns, thus your brothers Mechanicsburg address (17055-17050). About 5miles West of Grantham.

#2 points to Dillsburg and points South on rt15.

As a side note:
Rain starts and is steady, then stops for a while, then picks up again.
Since 5am EDT (10-29-12). Up 0.19 to a total of 0.34, We have 0.48 in our backyard.
At 10am it was:
Winds, N 12 G 20
Pressure, 29.48 998.4
Sometimes you can hear a howl....

Our local Fire Co. #19 had a one siren call at 6:20am. Wasn't close enough to the scanner to find out what it was.

Had a momentary outage (<5sec) at 7:16am. Long enough to set off every clock in the land.
Found out later there are outages already in the area.

For anyone that wants to keep track of the Central Pa. area, I'm sure your local Power Co. has something similar.

I'm planning an Album I'll post the link.
I'll try to keep updates say, 6-12pm, if I miss one it means power is out.

We've lost power many times at my location in Florida. The sub-division I'm in is all underground electric lines, but its the usual open overhead lines to the sub-division.

Steve, yes, it really is north. I'm originally from Mechanicsburg but I've been away too long (I left in 1955 when I went into the Air Force).

All schools are closed today.

Got another warning from the Telephone company that people may loose their internet connections.

Quote:
In the event of extreme weather conditions associated with Hurricane Sandy, impacted areas could experience power outages which would make your High Speed Internet service unavailable.
I think that would be the least of my concerns, more worried about the electricity. And we're sitting right on the boarder of a blizzard warning. Hopefully the wind blows most of the leaves off the trees so we don't have a repeat of last October....

Wishing everyone luck during this hurricane....

One of my co-workers just told me there are people out there driving around as the storm approaches.

Folks, hurricans and other tropical weather are NOT point sources of wind and rain ! Get to shelter and stay there until the all clear is sounded !

When the winds get above 45 miles per hour rescuers will NOT show up.
