Radar chops off some of Sandy - see the Big picture for a satellite image (added after WHS quoted). This thing is huge. And it's over almost land

Here is a video update site from the NHC. Hourly updates. Mouse over the middle of the video for options like full screen and volume.

Be safe everyone. Been through a lot of them down here in Louisiana and know when to hold them and know when to fold them.

The NHC has said that Sandy is now moving at 25mph and the eye will make landfall in 5-6 hrs. But Hurricane winds well before that. Already Storm Force winds from New York down to Washington DC.

Sandy is a category one. Hurricane Katrina was larger, much larger. I've dealt with these things since 1969. I was on a US Navy destroyer coming back across the Atlantic Ocean, we ran into Hurricane Camille at category 5 storm. We almost capsized multiple times. That was in 1969. But, well, sandy isn't the largest one I've been through.

Yup, the hurricane force winds are in a ring around the eye, tropical storm force winds go out from that circle.

This link will show you the hurricane force ring/oval along with the tropical storm winds area.

Hurricane winds 75 mph or higher.

Tropical force winds are 35-74 mph.

They say that the winds at the northern end of the center are the strongest. That would mean that NYC and the area get the hardest hit. All of that is not very encouraging.
