Is it just me or do the rest of you feel this way also? When I see a question asked and the member only has one post, the one with his question, I feel like he will not be back to view my answer and am less likely to try and help. If a guy is truly interested in learning Win 7, I would think he would lurk a while and comment on a few things before he asks a question. Am I wrong to feel this way?

From the short while I've been active here, alot of times it seems that the OP who's first post is help, that they are really hard to work with. Not all the time though.

a lot of people who come here need help with a prob, they are unlikely to lurk and make comments on other threads before getting back to their issue,
i kind of know what you mean about the single posts though,
sometimes you just know the OP aint going to post back ,i call them hit and runners.
i have answered many a thread to get no reply, even though i know my answer was right , its nice to have it confirmed.
still for every few runners there are stayers too, thats how we all came to be here.

    off topic

For those of you who have been on the Forum for a quite awhile know that there are times I have problems with my brain not working the way it should; now having said that the way I see it is some folks come here for one reason and only that reason which is to get others to fix their problem.

One of the ways they get here is by doing a Google search. Google places 7 Forum at the top of a search for those having problems with Win 7. Though being a good thing for the forum once the individuals get their problem fixed it is back to business as normal. Albeit, I will attempt to help them and hopefully welcome them to becoming a full member and participant in the forums.

Besides I need all the help I can get.

I start this by saying: (well, aside from what I just said, which is actually what started the sentence{oh boy, yes I know, I live in this brain of mine and it's horrible sometimes...}) I don't like to make eternal judgements on the nature of someone's being right or wrong in situations that don't really show themselves to be easily discernable from a utilitarian perspective. Now:

If by "feel that way" you mean make an assumption based on statistical knowledge of people, who, when they get their first problem solved, leave and don't come back, and utilizing that data to decide you don't want to help them, then I'd say, "I don't at all. Who am I to want a pat on the back every time I help/try to help someone, and if I feel I may not get that, not want to help them". I see every post as a possible last post for someone, because who knows, I may die if a plane crashes into my house tonight after I post this, of course, this is a different variable affecting one's non-desire to post back. The other person who reads my post and, say, answers it, will not know whether I died, knowingly didn't want to come back just to be a curmudgeon of sorts, or any grey area inbetween. So out of pragmatic use, why bother yourself? Don't let yourself worry about being worth as much as others feed you, because believe me, I'd be dead, heh.

On the "greediness" or "narcissism" associated with finding an answer/help then leaving immediately and giving not a second look back, such people will always exist, and it does no good to bother oneself over it, only helps to enlarge the ego and affix its position as the most important thing within oneself. Those gold pieces (people that like to: help people/learn) that one (oneself...yah, I know...unnecessary... supposed to be funny) finds in the streams of life (the forums of the internet) are worth it enough most of the time (mind my metaphor) to not mind them showing up much less commonly than the "hit and runners".

I was always a leech before I came to this forum. It took many a forum for me to feel the desire to become one with others, and to give up part of myself for a good that is not my own. Maybe these people need to skip by this forum for now to find another down the road that they'll like, for whatever reason, and nest there. What, is this everyone's first computer forum? This is roughly my tenth computer-based forum, and I don't know if this is anti altruistic, but I haven't the desire to nest at any other computer-based forums either.

But if we want to be like the "strange people who live alone and lack social skills, who, when a person walks past on the street, we ask them a question in order to garner a response with the idea of reeling them in closer to feel a sense of unity with other people" (I'm not making fun, just trying to be humorous), could there be a way of engaging the person on a quasi-mandatory note, to get them to be more likely to stick around, or is that a manipulative, dictator-esque, marketing (refer to Bill Hicks) trick that is too unagreeable to do? Like open up with instead of, "Hello and welcome to..." with "Hey, let me tell you this joke I heard the other day, real quick", heh.

I want to say more I think...but I've taken two sleep aids in the past hour and a half and feel silly.

Not really. Here's a personal experience: I create an account on a forum that might help. I ask a question. Possible scenarios that I might feel:

    1. Reply is too complicated
    2. Reply seems too stupid (already did that or that's just ridiculous)
    3. Reply is tl;dr

In those cases, I wouldn't bother replying and would just search else where. Here's a few more scenarios that might cause me not too reply.

    1. Holy crap! That post just gave me an idea on how to finally fix my problem!
    2. Problem solved. I'm happy now

In those cases, I'll just be happy my problem is solved and I won't bother too reply. Note that this was my experience on my pre-teen/teen years. It's possible also that, because of my age, I don't bother to be considerate in replying.

In my experience helping a first poster has been good. Many time the thread has went to multiple pages.
I came here with a question now forgotten, and stuck around a bit.

I was one of those NEW people who came because I needed help.(.I chose to join,)
this forum came through for me.
I had more replies than I could possible do or follow.. that can surely wear one out ,
all meant to be helpful.. however at times when one is following a really great helpful reply,Less is more. My help threads have been running a lot of pages..with such helpful members coming in to assist or make comments

I've stayed because of the wonderful fun we all seem to enjoy with one another in the Chillout Room threads.

I usually pick those posters (if I have any info). They came here for help. Many people aren't that outgoing to participate, so only come out of the woodwork when they need to. If someone wants help...I suppose that's what we're here for
