    Just got this PM

And it looks a bit fishy...

    Greatings from Russia :)

I'd like you to help me spending 1-2 minutes! Could you help me?

I have no windows 7, but i need to check one thing:
on any *.exe application rightclick, choose properties, then to to tab "Compatibility" and set it to compibility with Windows VISTA.

Then open registry (start->run->"regedit") and to to the path:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
(I hope it's the same as in Windows Vista i have).
Find the filename of application in the keys of this pass and please tell me it's value, it'll be probably something like "WINVISTA" or something else.

I need this value, you'll spend a minut to get it!

Then you may change the parameter of campatibility back by GUI or deleting value for this program).

    Thanks a lot.
    What would this do?

I think if was me getting an email from a total stranger who somehow knew i was running the beta in the first place, I think I would be very suspicious and just delete the message.

Yeah, me too. I have no intention of running it. I got it as a PM on these boards.

What he is asking is hardly malicious and its pretty obvious almost everyone here is running win7.

Very suspicious. I would be inclined to forward this to Shawn (Brink) and John (z3r010) to see what they make of it. Coming from Russia as a PM should set the alarm bells ringing, just as much as if the same message had come from China. Don't forget to send the message in its entirety, as Shawn and John will need to know who sent it (they must be registered to send a PM).

I strongly disagree with your comment here. True, most people here are running W7 (although I am not currently - hopefully this will change next weekend when I have some spare time) , but if it was all above board, why wasn't this posted in the Forum itself? Sending an unsolicited PM is certainly not the way to proceed. It seems as though HikerRemastered was picked at random in the hope that s/he would carry out the request. We could then expect similar requests from the same source in the future, and because this one came as a PM, we would have to assume that others would too.

Exactly. The person should have posted his questions in the Forum and not just randomly pm someone with this question. This act in itself makes it suspicious, not to mention coming from Russia like Dwarf says, where a majority of malicious attacks comes from.
