I'm an automotive technician and I've seen that more times than I'd like to count. The customer always says the same thing. "I didn't hear anything" or "My brakes are making a little noise".

I have seen them worn mighty thin but I have never seen one totally worn off like that.

Lucky they don't lock up a front wheel at 70mph or so. That could be interesting.

Honestly mine are making the little warning pad failure imminent noises, will probably have to machine the rotors by the time I can get it fixed.

Also since I'm posting here another image.

I saw this same failure a little over 10 years ago on a Ford F250 with a 4-piston caliper. Glad it wasn't mine.

When they wear that far down the piston usually gets cocked in the caliper (the piston can no longer get "pushed" by the brake fluid) preventing any wheel lock up. I've also seen some instances where one pad is completely missing and the piston is rubbing on the rotor.
It's all about preventative maintainence.

i once saw someone that claimed their car wont slowing down well, turns out the disk brake corroded itself in the middle and the disk itself was just loose in the space between the wheel hub and the axle
