Here's yet another e-mail I've received tonight trying to steal my information. It threatens that my automated bank deposits may be at risk or blocked if I don't take action. It's supposedly from the FDIC (FDIC: Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
). Note however that the FDIC is an insurer of banks and deals with them, not you. They insure that if a bank goes belly up, you get your money. They don't contact individuals concerning their banking accounts or deposits. That's not their role! - FDIC Insurance - How FDIC Insurance Works
. That said...
In order to reduce the number of cases of fraud and scams, we have adopted a new security system. In this connection all your account ACH and WIRE transactions will be blocked until you set up the required updates.. In order to rehabilitate your account, it is necessary that you install a special security software. Please use the link (link removed) below and follow the instructions to proceed with the installation.
We apologize for causing you troubles by this measure.
If you need any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
Clearly a scam. Notice the verbiage... rehabilitate your account. Really???
Please make sure your loved ones don't get scammed like this, especially those not so savvy. Ex: the young and elderly. If they have any questions, they can call their bank, or the company/business handling their automatic deposits. No legitimate company is going to ask you to install some piece of software without explaining what it is and what it does.
