Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water this sort of crap comes up. Well if what it is saying is true and Windows is going to be tablet based then I for one will go Linux and they can stick it

    My feelings also.

When you go shopping in the big box stores in our area nowadays, you can see several sales clerks walking around with a tablet, and you see "wi-fi available" signs all over the place.
It's supposed to "enhance" the customer experience, and free up the clerks to mingle more with customers. HA!

Not when you have a clerk that don't know how to use one and locks it up or if your in a blind spot. You think I'm going to have the clerk swipe my card on one of those, you have another think comin'.

Their trying to get my DW to use one. She doesn't like it.

Yep I know what you mean Anak I have a real problem with store people who are constantly clutching a price swiper, mobile phone or like you say one of those wretched devices. To be honest if the desktop went away if for example we could not use any OS then I would rather go without anything.

But I got this through just now as your reply popped up which is a bit of a comfort lest hope this bloke is right. Myself as in the article do they think that the folks who put out the 4+ million apps are just lie down and take this? I don't think so somehow.

There have been many morons predicting the end of the desktop for a long time, but it ain't happening. People are holding on to what they have and not buying new ones. It is a matter of M$ telling users what we want. They seem to have lost touch with reality and I suspect they will see a big drop in consumer sales.

Whoever labeled the pic in the article :Windows 8 desktop we know and love" must have been on crack or smoking wacky tobacky.

Steve, what is a DW? Dumb wife?

What this is really about is "SAS' Software as a Service. The idea is to rent or offer a subscription for your software and data in "The Cloud"(what a crock of a marketing term). This is an new take on the "Thin Client" business model. Of course what could/has ever gone wrong with this idea.
I want to own and have onsite all my hardware, software and data. A remote backup is fine as long as the data isn't released via a hole in the cloud.

    Yes, pretty much.

MS want to get rid of the desktop.

It will take them a while.

Meantime, they are trying to keep users in the metro UI (like a mobile phone ).

That way the start screen ( a full screen advertising billboard ) keeps coming up - promoting their online stuff, and littered with bing "apps".

We do this already when we do renewals also this is just another way to keep tabs on people install software on multiple machines they are really trying to push everyone must have there own ID as this will stop Hacked OS like win Ultimate and such but moving to such a platform has cost them but they would rather take that loss then to keep having pirated versions of there top software floating around for anyone who didn't pay for it to use

What Eris is referring to (I think) is you can't "buy" MS Office2013, for example, you pay a yearly subscription fee to go to the net and use it, it's not installed on your drive.

Of course any paid for software is still owned by the company. The license give us the "right to use it on one PC". some free program are also this way.

I understood that is why it is geared to stop hackers because it will be tied to who ever logs in
