Watch Three Years' Worth of Action on the Sun

NASA sent its Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) into space in early 2010 to do what your kindergarten teacher warned you not to—stare directly into the sun. Three years into its mission, the SDO has served up some amazing solar science and even treated us to the sight of the dazzling magnetic phenomena known as coronal rain.

This week, the space agency shared a video which compresses three years' worth of SDO sun-spotting into under three minutes. It's a stunning look at our home star as it spins on its axis, its surface a cauldron of activity that is indistinguishable in the searing, white-hot picture the sun presents to the naked human eyes of rebellious and immediately regretful kindergartners.

If the human race has the imagination and vision to make such things possible, perhaps just perhaps one day we can be at peace ....
