    Because "His boat is only large enough to hold him and one of his goods at a time" So he can't carry foxes and corn. He could of course let the chickens eat the corn so reducing the number of items! He might get more for the chickens if they were fatter!

    actually a sequence of three followed by another sequence of three ...
    each sequence:

    • first number of sequence provided
    • second number = first number + 4
    • third number = second number - 12

    number following each three number sequence is given
    math performed to find second and third numbers
    ... repeat ...
