Windows 7: Choices choices

Choices choices

I recently went overseas an was completely stuck with no phone even after buying a cheap one in the UK I still couldn't get it to work.

So I ma going to have to cave in and get one of the newer types with those flick screens which all around me were using no problems.

Now my problem is I have NO idea on what to get my son says the Apple iPhone and others tell me a smart phone such as a Samsung Galaxy?. Now my son tells me the iPhones are repairable if the break but the smartphones are not so there is one issue.
Another is I have no idea on what specs I should look for except that it is unlocked.

Pricewise the smartphones are a lot cheaper (by about $100 than the Apples) but I have found some second hand ones on Ebay that some have upgraded from but again what the specs mean is just out of my understanding.
Most are 16GB capacity and I don't know if that is going to be enough or for that matter what it is for.
The last concern is that I ma not a great lover of Apple and I don't really want to download Apple software onto my machine say for the purpose of downloading photos.

Can anyone give me a rough idea what I should aim for please?
