Hotel Puzzler

A party of 12 people are looking for somewhere to spend the night. Each member of the party wants a separate room. After going to several hotels and finding them all fully booked, they happen to come across the smallest hotel in the town. Unfortunately, it has only 11 rooms and, as we know, there are 12 in the party.

This concerns the party leader, however by now they are all very tired and just want somewhere to sleep for the night. He goes to see the hotel proprietor, who listens very carefully.

The proprietor thinks hard, and then says "I have a solution. Would you all please follow me."

He leads the party into the hotel and asks the first 2 members to wait in room 1. He then escorts the remaining members into their rooms in turn. He takes the 3rd member into room 2, the 4th into room 3, the 5th into room 4 and so on until he takes the 11th into room 10. At this point, he goes back to the first room and escorts one of the members into room 11.

Can anyone explain how the hotel proprietor managed to satisfy everyone?

Correct, Dinesh.

At no time was the 12th member mentioned, apart from in the first paragraph. The reason that this puzzle appears to work is because of the phrasing of the paragraph beginning He leads the party into the hotel which leads you to believe that room 10 is eventually occupied by the 11th member of the party, leaving room 11 free to place the 12th member in, after taking him from room 1. In reality, members 1 & 2 are already in room 1, and it is one of those members that eventually ends up in room 11. The final member of the group, member 12, is NOT allocated a room and has to spend the night in the stables with the horses.
