Windows 7: California ("Land of the Free" Bans Large TV's

I suppose the rest of the world has always regarded California in general as something of a bit of a "strange" place - but this must be a First -- I read that they are going to BAN flat screen TV's with screens > 40 ins.

(My first reaction after initial disbelief) was perhaps the NTSC system is so horrible and grainy on large screens that nobody would buy them anyway --but there is GOOD HDTV in the US so this couldn't be the reason.

I've been in the states many times and enjoy watching sport in a Bar on a large screen.

If this is done in the name of Energy conservation - pure TOSH --California could create enough SOLAR energy to supply probably 40% of the ENTIRE USA's needs if it started on that road instead of stopping people enjoy one of the few relatively cheap pleasures left.

If the "Tree Huggers" want to be sensible -- try and get some decent and SAFE public transport in places like LA, Fresno etc etc.
Mind you California is no stranger to peculiar rules -- didn't Santa Monica actually BAN smoking cigarettes on the beach.

I currently live in L.A, and I lived in Fresno for 8 years before that. Born and raised in California, certainly no tree hugger though.

Yes, they did ban smoking in Santa Monica, the whole city. Also, in public in the city of Burbank now too.

When I drove a Semi, I was in and out of LA quite a bit... In Ontario at one of the larger truck stops they tried to outlaw idling your truck overnight ... almost had a riot... Ontario Police refused to enter the truck stop and face 3k angry truckers ... the law was repealed...

Wow, they've gone from Ban The Bomb, to Ban The Flatscreen TV, what a turn around.

I believe that the ban - if it occurs and stands - is on plasma TVs because of the power consumption. Large screen LCDs would be OK, as I recall.

Yes, California COULD get a lot more solar and wind power, but (and there's always a but or two involved in these things) there are environmental studies, endangered species studies, yadda yadda to do before anything moves out there.

Example: Wind power - will it kill the birds that fly into the turbines? Are the turbines in the flight path of any migratory species? Will the construction harm the environment? Are there any endangered species whose mating would be disturbed by the noise? See how this goes? Solar is just as bad.

We are missing the opportunity to fuel coal-burning power plants with dead birds.

One of the BIGGEST helps to Global warming would be to SALARY CAP every politician WORLD WIDE to around 200 USD PER WEEK.

That would stop them buying their expensive 25 room mansions (with only 3 people living on the estate), Gas guzzling cars and mega hungry power appliances. The energy saved would more than balance the consumption of a few TV sets.

Meanwhile I'm going to CONTINUE to enjoy watching sport on a HUGE screen - the bigger the better.

We've got unlimited geothermal energy which we can't export - so we might as well enjoy it - especially since our Banks have gone Bust so we are stuck at home a lot more now.

Surely there are a lot more URGENT problems on this planet than fiddling around with the size of TV screens people use -- Natural technological development will improve the power consumption of these devices anyway as people will want to reduce the size of their electricity bills as prices rise.

For example who uses CRT monitors any more (or even CRT TV's).

If the only problem the state of California has to deal with is power consumption of TV's people must be really lucky -- No crime, panhandlers, unemployment, bad schools, bad health provision for "un-insured" etc etc. Lucky them.

Last time I took a trip to downtown LA there seemed to be plenty of issues that needed attention having a far higher priority than this piece of nonsense.
