Am I the only one who think TV has regressed in the last 20 years

    Hi there

While we have HD and soon 4K giant size TV sets it seems to me that the quality of the programs just gets worse and worse - apart from a very few exceptions.

I've been looking back at some of the stuff produced in the 1960's / 1970's via this site Crime | Television | DVDs and Blu-ray Films and some of these old series were INFINITELY better than modern stuff -- they had REAL STORIES with AUDIBLE DIALOG and not just made up of excessively loud special effects and stunts with half the actors / actresses speaking on mobile phones all the time.

Perhaps it's a sign of me just getting old but I can't stand any more of these endless "Reality TV" nonsense, incredibly hideous untalented "Musicians" spewing out stuff that would sound better in a cheap Karaoke bar or yet more "Celebs" trying to impress people with their Cooking skills (Or lack of them).

Enough to drive anybody out to the nearest Bar whatever the weather. !!

    Cheers
    jimbo

Totally agree about "Reality TV" the worst of the lot. Here in Australia we have had for a few years digital tv, so now all the stations have FILLED them with all the same crap, Reality, Cooking, Auction shows. The 3 main stations here 7, 9, 10, they ALL HAVE there own version of those crap shows, my friends wonder why I watch so much of the older TV shows/Movies and they seem to be on at the SAME BLOODY TIME!. Finished my rant. Cheers time for my evening meal.

i think the issue is that 20 years ago there were so few tv stations and media organisations, there wasnt social networking and technology for txting into the shows competitions ec, there is a new template for making shows that make money , previously 20 years ago this wasnt the case so the emphasis was on quality and capturing the numbers of viewers,
that said some of the shows today give others the opportunity to shine,
last night we saw this youngster on a reality show,

and this couple singing last year...

    who are not talentless musicians.

I have to agree 100%. TV is slipping & slipping rapidly. Once one channel come up with a new program idea all the others follow with something similar until we are nearly driven mad. Variations between channels has got so similar that you often have to check which rubbish channel you are on.
Also news services now only seem to cater for the sensational & the quality of journalism has slipped so much that half the time the item being reported is completely wrong.
Advertising now nearly occupies 50% of the program time & commercial channels often run 10 minutes or more overtime because of so much damned advertising. If something is advertised repeatedly on TV I don't buy it as I will only be contributing more to their advertising revenue.

Definitely, broadcast network TV has been hurtling down a slippery slope. Between the so called reality shows (which are anything but reality), "talent" competitions in only one genre (that I detest) and with obnoxious judges, obnoxious commercials mimicking sitcoms or newscasts, increasingly stupid and/or raunchy sitcoms, schedules changing almost weekly, repeats in the middle of the season, and series being discontinued without warning or resolution, I've just about had it. I won't watch some stations anymore and I will not watch anymore new series because I'm sick and tired of getting hooked on them only to have the b*****ds discontinue it, leaving me hanging, wondering what was going to happen next.

Reality and talent shows just do my head in, I tend to watch the News (and my local news) - weather and a couple of channels I subscribe to (maybe 4 hours a week). I don't do soaps - mindless cr*p !
