VLC / MX player /Mobo multi media players (and streaming)
All these work fine on Android - with HDMI out ==> decent TV / Monitor you can watch your movies from your phone. All these apps are FREE. Don't waste your money on Remote commanders or whatever - the ES-FILE EXPLORER is good enough for remote access.
This saves messing about moving laptops etc. Just search the ES-FILE explorer's LAN setting and your shared folders will be seen on your phone's screen.
Samsung S4 has excellent full 1080p output so even looks fine on large screen too -- VLC is nice as it's an old favourite from Windows - but the other two apps are good as well and of course with the Es-File explorer - makes streaming from your Network device to TV SIMPLE !!!! -- enable sharing on the drive where your movies are stored.
If you use the phone's storage then you will really need at least a 32 GB micro sdhc card.
Most of the common formats will be handled by the three movie players I've listed and work on android 4.2 as well.
Use the ES-File explorer for playing remote movies etc from computer - click open with (one of the three movie players) and away you go.
Much easier than setting up networks etc for playing movie from remote device or messing about connecting laptop to TV.
I'm using Galaxy S4. These apps work on scores of other phones / tablets too.
(Remote STREAMING from computer to phone to TV is another matter - this system works easily for accessing REMOTE stored / downloaded content on your computer and playing it on your phone with output to a large TV / monitor via HDMI).
(This type of approach should also work for tablets too -- I don't have one so I haven't tested with a tablet - works great for phones).
