    i think mason jars have screw on lids that come apart.
    kilners have the metal clip mechanism.

    Scrap?

    It is a brand name thing - like Coke for dark soft drinks/sodas.

    All Mason jars used to have the clamp style lid, then they moved on to screw on types. In these parts, even other brands of jars are called Mason jars. I've never heard of Kilner. That brand as a term has not made the trip across the pond.

    no to the previous three guesses ,
    yeah i can see there being a language thing , an earlier guess of mine was asphalt, in the uk we call it tarmac.
