My two cents on social media:

I had never thought I will defend social media in general and Facebook in particular, but in all honesty being an ex-pat who wants to communicate and stay in touch with a large family spread around in various countries on a few continents, social media is for me the easiest, fastest and cheapest way to manage it.

On a typical day I can have a chat with a niece in Finland on Viber, see photos from my brother from Hong Kong on Facebook, post a photo to Instagram for my sister to see, see a video of my cousin's sons playing football in Dublin on Facebook, laugh for Dinesh' joke on WhatsApp and end the day with a Skype video chat with my son. All this either from my couch or on the road using mobile phone.

All this free of charge as I would have the Internet connection in any case even without these services.

About the original topic: I believe I would have reacted exactly as Indianacarnie did, deleted my account on a web service if they only gave me the option to join a certain social media in order to continue my membership. As I already am in Facebook I might have accepted the conditions in this case but I most definitely had not joined a new social media site only to access another service.

Except for the video chat, you can do all of that with email. As far as video chats go, I believe in being comfortable when at home but most folks might find that a bit scary.

When I was a boy, circa 1958-62-ish, I would work for my dad painting new homes at times. One we worked in had a telephone in <gasp> the bathroom on the wall next to the throne, unheard of!

If the phone rang when we were out of the house no one would know till the person called back, no answering machines yet, or affordable ones. Nowadays as was pointed out you see kids, 7-8 years old running out of school with cells and poking them as they run.

That's another bitch of mine - what's the big attraction of texting?!? A phone IS an audio device after all, I hate texting. Having said all this I do carry a cell all the time if I don't forget where I put it. The good woman also has one and they are our only phones, no landlines.

Sorry Scott for the derailment, but these threads are fun. :)

No problem at all!, I'm enjoying the discussion as much as everyone else is. Just happy that most if not all agree with me about being forced to join a social media site to access a news one. I've resisted fb even when it meant losing female companionship! Talk about a bittersweet experience !

Frank what color font did you use? It appears black on the SF Dark theme.
I think I know what's going on. When I post anything, I first open MSWord and type it there. I spell check it and then do a copy/paste. Apparently, it must not like the font that Word uses. This one should be OK since I typed directly here.

I think I know what's going on as to why my posts are not displayed right. When I post anything, I first open MSWord and type it there. I spell check it and then do a copy/paste. Apparently, it must not like the font that Word uses. This one should be OK since I typed directly here.

That's what John figured in Gary's thread,

Just quote and look at the posts, they all have black set by the user either intentionally or due to a copy and paste from something like word.
Bad forum display with dark theme

I don't have a Facebook account but I can see the benefits for those that do.
Hmm, what would these benefits be ?? Letting everybody know when you went to the mall, head a coffee, went to the loo, etc. must not be very revealing.
heres a benefit to facebook that my partner uses it for.
take a class of degree students ,studying counselling.
they start a facbook group, it is only available to those in the group, they discuss the studies, assignments share study links, information , research links, support each other , they socialise to a certain level and have a better closer relationship despite them all living in different towns.
some share cars for lifts and organise pick ups through the fb group,
and countless other reasons they use the group for.

then my daughter goes to uni, before she started in September ,she had contacted the girls through facebook that she would be sharing a flat with in halls of residence,
it was a good ice breaker so none of them were strangers when they met.
she also has a fb group for her studies and her uni has an fb page too for sharing important info and other students meet that way too.
very handy and not just for people who like to share cat memes.

Very interesting. I have to admit I have not known you can do all this by email.

Maybe you should make a tutorial about this extended use of email. For the future reference, could you please tell me how to set up an instant online chat using email, let's say between 10 plus participants as we often do with my cousins and siblings? I mean instant online in the sense that each participant sees all the comments of all other participants in chronological order the same moment they are posted (sent) and can logically follow the discussion.

Also I would like you to teach me how to set up the photo sharing with email, so that selected participants (family members in my case) can all comment the shared photos and and everyone can see the comments in chronological order and comment other comments and see the discussion flow?
