Windows Explorer does not make money for Microsoft. If you were making OS deployment decisions for a large company, would you pick W7 if you had to certify the performance of its file manager?

Don't you think they should open-source the old 95/98/Me disk defragmenter as well?

Yeah, sure. Then we had a situation something like in Linux already is: A Windows (Linux) core and tens of slightly different Windows (Linux) distros. Winbuntu users bashing WinMint users, WinDebi users not able to assist WinDriva users and so on.

Should the steering wheel be removed from all cars because automakers make no money in selling steering wheels?

Of course they make money for Microsoft, simply by being built-in native integral tools in the operating system they sell. A stripped to core Windows would be quite harder to sell.

We should all be thankful that Microsoft has no intentions of doing this. For large numbers of individuals and organizations with malicious intent this would be a dream come true. It would make their job so much easier.

In any event, Microsoft could not release this code even if they wanted to. There is substantial code in these products that was written by third parties and used under license. Releasing this code would be a violation of the license terms and a source of numerous expensive lawsuits.

    And there is much more.
