Intriguing math question on UK quiz show

This question on BBC's 'Only Connect' fascinated me -

what's next in this series

A : one hundred and one
B : one billion
C : one octillion

????

like the panel, I guessed a googol or a googolplex

the answer was 'D : one hundred'

reason - first number containing A, B, C, D

TV dumbing down ? not at the beeb

'googol' was the 1M answer on UK Who Wants to be a Millionaire in 2001. The guy won, but was found to have cheated.
