The Amazon smartphone is here: meet the Fire Phone

Quote:
Amazon doesn't just sell smartphones anymore — it makes one. In news that should surprise exactly no one, Jeff Bezos has officially unveiled Amazon's first cellphone, the Fire Phone. It'll be available July 25th, exclusively on AT&T starting at $199 with a two-year contract, and it's perhaps the most futuristic and wide-ranging device Amazon has ever attempted.

The Fire Phone has a 4.7-inch, 720p display, aluminum buttons, a Qualcomm processor, Adreno 330 graphics, and 2GB of RAM. It's 0.35 inches thick, and weighs 5.64 ounces. Bezos talked a lot about the phone's build, from the injection-molded connectors to the chamfered edges. There's a set of stereo speakers that Bezos promised are better than your average phone, and a set of headphones he swears that won't tangle. (That last bit sounds impossible, but we'll have to wait and see.)

Dam, that sounds very expensive. I guess things must be different in the States but in the UK if you take out a 2 year contract you usually get the handset free. It's not exactly killer specs either. In fact my Xperia Z appears to be better and that's an old phone now. I paid nothing for it on a 24 month contract. Upgrade time for me will be Feb next year.

Yea for a two year contract I've never bought a phone for more than 99.00 u.s. and that's only because the freebie was junk,
For 200 you can get a really good phone and not a test piece from a newbie manufacture

The thing I don't like about them is they don't use stock Android, they use their bloated Fire OS.

You are also limited to AT&T, a less than stellar carrier with less coverage than some other carriers, such as Verizon.

You should become a spokesperson for Verizon with that knowledge. But seriously, Verizon is better which is why I use it.
