Stargate Universe - Do you Love it or Hate it

    Hi all
I loved the first 2 Stargate productions (SG-1 and SG atlantis) -- I've got the entire DVD set of both Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis (shame it ended after series 5) but after episode 5 of SGU I'm not sure I like it yet.

It seems to me that it's been a bit dumbed down -- I shudder also every time I see the main scientific doctor (Dr Nicholas Rush) - every Scotsman on the planet must cringe at the way he is playing his arrogant role -- I've been in Scotland many times and most are certainly NOT like that.

Dr Mackay in Stargate Atlantis was arrogant but in quite an OK way and at least you got a smattering of Science as well.

I'm beginning to get the feeling that SGU is nothing more than "Eastenders" or "Coronation St" in space. (If you haven't seen UK TV these are just two long running depressing Soap operas in which nearly everybody comes from a dysfunctional family, is mired in debt, has lover problems and in general is a totally depressing statement on modern life - if I had to live like that I probably would have ended it all years ago).

My guess is that it wont last past series 3 unless they beef up the story line a lot and go a bit more up market for genuine SCI FI fans.

    Cheers

The jury is still out for me, but I will continue to watch it as there is hardly any Sci-Fi stuff left on the TV these days that I haven't seen.

    Hi, Jimbo,

It is good to run into someone else who has the complete collection of the Stargate series, I notice you didn't mention the two movies, "Stargate Continuum, and Stargate The Ark Of Truth" (both are excellent because they brought Stargate SG1 to its conclusion.)

By Avatar is Amanda Tapping, Colonel Carter.

As to Stargate Universe I feel the same way. What is missing is were is this going. There seems to be no real objective, like say figuring a way home. Reminds me a little of Star Trek Voyageur. Another thing missing is the usual bad guys.

It was abit dull until Destiny "recharged" itself, but now it might get better. Just have to wait and see.

    Hi there
I have those movies -- I "filched" them from a Sky TV box and copied to DVD

When I'm home I can just about get SKY TV - we are near the extremes for Satellite TV but it works with a not too humungous dish size.

Above the Artic circle it's a no go as you can't get an elevation of Dish to see the geo-centric satellite orbit that runs along the equator. Below the Artic circle its OK.

Although "officially" you aren't allowed to take a SKY TV box plus viewing card out of the UK I got round the restriction by using an Irish box and viewing card - bought in Amsterdam's notorious Waterlooplein Flea market - most of the bars in Europe that show Sky TV / SKY Sports use the Irish box anyway so plenty of help if probs arise.

Lets hope the series does improve a bit soon.

    Cheers

Isn't something how us geeks can find a way to get something to work if we really want something.

The stargate series lost its magic.
I loved Stargate Atlantis, i have all their DVDs. I loved the way mckay was so sarcastic, and how sheppard would play along sometimes.
The only character i didn't like was teyla :P.

Now, stargate Universe isn't nothing like Atlantis or SG1. Its like a really cheap production, with characters you don't relate to. I mean, wtf was that sex part in the first episode? its science fiction, not a porno.

Put all of that in one word: I hated it

I am a big SCI-FI fan and hope that SGU gets better, was really upset they cut SGA. I was also watching Defying Gravity but here in the US the cut the show short for some reason, another sci-fi show V is coming to ABC but they only baught 4 shows so no clue if that will take off either.

Not sure if flash forward is sci-fi or not but it fills in for the time being.

I have a question, I know downloading movies is a NO-NO does that go for TV shows also? I mean you can watch them over the air for free and tape them for later viewing so would downloading a TV be the same idea? Reason I ask honestly is because there are a few shows I watched that I can't get here in Orlando and they are not on hulu yet.

I agree. SGU is kind of lame for a SciFi series born from SG-1 and SGA. I never understood why the writers did'nt exploit other "Gods" like the Mayans & Aztecs. No they have an arrogant scientist? and a computer gamer geek trying to take this marvelous smart space craft somewhere.

The military personnel is also lame. A young LT without any balls and a Commander as whimpy as Popeye's "Whimpy".

I quite like it actually, I've only just started watching Sci-fi and SGU has characters from the current time that I can relate to. Instead of immediately being immersed into a massive alien vs some other alien battle.

Although, for hard core sci-fi fans, I can see that it is alot more like a drama than anything else.
