    My Windows 9 wishlist

I have a feeling that nobody from Microsoft will look at this but it still makes me feel better to list what I want from Windows 9 because right now, these things bug me. And these are just my needs. Your needs might be different and you might think my ideas are bad ideas, but this stuff is for my own personal use. Feel free to add to my list.

    1) Better scaling for higher resolutions. I saw some people on Youtube with 4K monitors and their taskbar and start menu were tiny. I think MS should include something to make the taskbar scale with the resolution no matter what it is. Use a math formula. If the DPI is X pixels, then the taskbar should be X pixels wide and tall.

    2) Easier access to other computers on LAN. I have to input a bunch of passwords to access files on other PCs in the house and sometimes I can't even access the files anyways. I just want there to be a way that I can get into any PC on my LAN. That might bring up some security concerns but honestly, we have nothing that a thief would ever want. Unless they want to steal my Skyrim saves and summer vacation pictures, they will get nothing interesting.

    3) No login screen. I had to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 7 (see what I did there) because the PC I built my disabled father kept asking for a password EVEN WHEN we disabled all passwords and logins. Any change made to the PC required his Outlook password even when we disconnected his Outlook account from the PC. And he wears thick glasses and has arthritis so he doesn't need to be typing in all these passwords.

    4) Make pop up windows stay in the background. I have had times when I was typing something and I didn't notice a new window popped up and I accidentally selected something in the new window not realizing it because I thought that I was still typing. I look at the keys when I type so it gets frustrating having to mess with that.

Hi. Every single point you have raised is already available in Windows 7 & 8.x.
1 Taskbar and icons can be made bigger, unlock the task bar and drag it to the size you want. Icons, right click on Desktop select view and choose small, medium and large icons. Also unchck use small icons in taskbar properties.
2 Set up you network correctly and use real networks and not homegroups. When asked for a password check the box remember. Make sure you have an account on every machine, that makes it easier.
3 You can bypass the login screen if you want, it is really easy:
    1. Go to Control Panel > User Accounts and remove the password.

    2. Configure the computer to log into your user account automatically:

    a. Press WindowsKey+R .
    b. Type control userpasswords2 in the Open:box and press Enter.
    c. Un-check Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer .
    d. Click Apply.
    e. Enter your user name and password.
    f. Click OK twice.
4 I am not affected by programs stealing focus. It is usually something prompting for a required answer (copy file job "Do you wish to copy or replace this file as it already exists" Bloody Thumbs db files!) I like to know what is going on and I get it is annoying. Here is what I found on Superuser.
windows 7 - Preventing applications from stealing focus - Super User
If you stopped this happening it would make windows unusable....
So really what you are asking for in 9 in fact can be done in 7, take a look at the tutorials and you can set up your systems so they don't annoy you.

I generally try to stay away from this site after a rather unpleasant experience, but I couldn't resist responding to this one..

Here is my list of fixes/changes that *might* encourage me to return to Windows as my primary operating system (I have 11 PCs/Laptops at home), in no particular order.

    1. return of Aero Glass
    2. Get rid of the pre-school flat, boring graphics look introduced with Windows 8
    3. Get rid of start screen
    4. Reduce dependence on online services & social networking (I don't use social networking, cloud, stores, etc). At present there are complications and downsides to not using them when using Windows 8.x
    5. Restart the TechNet Service, or provide an "equivalent" service
    6. Fix the multitude of bugs in Task Manager
    7. Bring Back the Backup and Restore functions, and dump file recovery
    8. Put back the functionality gutted from Explorer.
    9. Start menu as in Windows 7. Desktop only for desktop computers/laptops
    10. Make updates & Patches available outside "windows store". I'm never going to use Microsoft's Store services
    11. Put the games back. I'm not going to go to Windows store to get them
    12. Task manager has split useful information across two panels. Information that was once displayed in the status bar is gone. Put it back. When looking at details I shouldn't have to go back to a second panel to review information that was once available on a single panel.
    13. Put back persistent shadow copies.
    14. Add back functionality removed from "Manage Wireless networks" I don't want to have to open a cmd window to use netsh all the time. Netsh doesn't support all the functionality anyway.
    15. Add functionality back for libraries, and allow libraries to be created for network locations without the need for 3rd Party tools.
    16. Add support for DDR4 (assuming CPU support), and USB 3.1 (assuming mobo support).
    17. Get rid of the ribbon and bring back toolbars. Smaller, neater, more mature and not so "pre-school looking".
    18. Allow "the entire folder tree view in the navigation pane cannot be collapsed vertically in explorer".
    19. Reinstate "The Remember each folder's view settings option to set Explorer to persist or not persist folder views and icon sizes per folder"
    20. reinstate the ability for "Windows Explorer to remember individual folder window sizes and positions". Each folder window shares the same size, and their position cascades as more windows are opened".
    21. Allow users to select either Quick Launch or Pinned Applications. When an application is installed when using Quick launch do not create a pinned application icon.
    22. Do not force users to log in at start up. No password = No log in screen, if that's how a user wants it.
    23. There are some apps that are borderless (seemingly not inside a window frame), Eg. Potplayer. Broaden support for this.
    24. And VERY IMPORTANT - NEVER make Windows subscription based. Buy it once, use it until it dies.

I'm sure there's more.. but can't think of them off the top of my head.

I'm sure someone will say "Stay with Windows 7". Sadly, several of these fixes I've mentioned were removed from Vista when 7 was made.

And just in case I forgot to mention it - Bring back Aero glass and get rid of the kindergarten look and feel. "Idiocracy" may be coming fast but it isn't here yet.

IMHO "responsive" simply means gutting an OS. Continually removing functionality until all you have is a core that basically does nothing useful.

    Bye!

    Start menu.
Windows Backup with automatic system imaging just like in Windows 7.
Make it easier to run the system without having to connect to a Microsoft account.
Get rid of that hibernate boot thing (because Windows 7 and below PCs think they are in hibernate mode and it can cause weirdness on certain systems. I wish Microsoft would just actually optimize Windows instead of cheat the boot up with this.
Don't embed product keys into UEFI.
Make it easy to reinstall Windows on UEFI PCs.
Have Digital River download links for Windows 9 isos.

Just most of the 7 stuff to be honest I run 8.1 on this laptop but with a 7 style start up all the bits like Aero well that is a bit of bling and easily got rid of. All in all I think if it turns out anything resembling 8 with all those rotten colouring abilities I think I shall be pretty darn mad.

I think you can disable the log in password on windows 8 but it is a pain to do. Is windows really going to go subscription based? MS is going to need to figure out alternative ways people can pay for it, not everyone has a debit or credit card or checking account. Isn't number 21 instal option up to the developer of the software?

22 xp was that way but no passwords was required. xp, 7 & 8 can auto log in with tweaks.

My personal list I can think of right now:
(I know probably MS will read it, but most likely will ignore its users as it's used to)

    1. Restore broken explorer funcionality. Full row selection, customizable toolbar, ability to associate file types built-in. Explorer has reached its peak in XP, and in decline since it. I would like to see it again.
    2. Fix the unreliable built-in file search, either by fixing the indexing service that rarely works as expected or throwing it away, and by giving the search a full featured UI like third party ones or as it was in XP.
    3. Restore the start menu! The iPhone one is nice and all, but non-practical in non-tablet devices (that happen to be 100% of those running Windows). Both classic and 7 ones would be nice.
    4. Making avaiable the options in Classic Shell and 7 Taskbar Tweaker would be nice too, making Windows totally customizable.
    5. Restore the graphical options wiped out in the lastest versions, classic style, aero, at least. Keeping metro as an option is not bad.
    6. Lots of Windows services should be disabled by default, rarely all of them are used and they do introduce security risks. UPNP, administrative shares, remote assistence, WEI or PCA.
    7. Windows Firewall should be enabled by default for outgoing connections too, and it must notify when connections are blocked, with the option to add a rule or preferably some "learn" mode.
    8. Ability to completely remove and uninstall Internet Explorer, not just degrade it to previous versions. For users that do not use it and prefer another, superior browser, this one is just bloat and security risks.
    9. Make Windows more safe by default (contrary to what MS says). The initial account after install MUST be standard, with an administrator password requested for system-wide changes. All other OSs follow this model.
    10. Add an option in Windows Explorer to make files and folder low integrity, the current command line only option is so hidden for most usage.
    11. Fix the critical UAC bug that allows any program to bypass it at will with the default settings (making the default UAC level as safe as no UAC at all).
    12. Make possible to easily download Windows updates to disk for backup purposes. Today you must Google each KB number and download them individually if you want a reliable backup or transfer to other computers.
    13. Completely remove "microsoft account" logins introduced in Windows 8. Those make no sense at all in a desktop system and only ties the computer to internet, as well to opening a privacy breach.
    14. Fix long standing bugs in Explorer: Not allowing renaming "dot" files and not honoring the background color when aero is enabled.
    15. Add support for SFTP in Explorer, as there is a precary FTP support right now.
    16. Option to mount FTP/SFTP/FTPS servers as drives, as it currently does with WebDAV.
    17. Don't continue to offer the scam OEM licences. Tying the license to "the first computer it touches" is not only doubtful etics, but I guess it might be illegal somewhere. Once I buy, I can put it anywhere I want, as long as I respect the maximum number of simultaneous installs.

Sure I'll miss many things, but those are the ones I can remember right now.

Whatever is in it, it's most likely already set in stone with only fixes coming behind it. A test version is rumored to be coming out in October or November.

XP is dropping in usage as well as Windows 8. Only a slight increase in 8.1 that doesn't account for W8's drop and Windows 7 keeps climbing as well as Mac OS. The "other" OSs have dropped by over a half in less than a year so they're loosing favor as an alternative. Unless W9 is stellar, Windows 7 and Mac OS will keep climbing. MS will have to re-release 7 or risk more jumping ship to Mac.
