Modern Warfare 2 - IW and their greed.

Infinity Ward recently announced that their upcoming game Modern Warfare 2 would not have dedicated servers. Instead, a service called IWnet is being implemented. What does this mean?

I think this is a great video response full of information as to how and why Infinity Ward has decided to make this decision of no dedicated servers for MW2. I agree with him that it is killing the competitive community and I am boycotting the game for sure.

Anyone else got an opinion on this? I think that IW just got greedy and are trying to get more bang for their buck. I shudder to think what would happen if more game companies decided to test their luck with this strategy. It would destroy all mature gaming and the online communities they thrive in.

My take is like every other PC gamers... No Dedicated severs = No buy.

I personally wasn't going to buy this game anyway. I think IW killed the CoD Franchise when they implemented Perks. I Can not stand perks, they are just little advantages or even cheats. I wish they would just go back to the CoD2 days.

I don't know what the big uproar is about. The fact is that we don't have a clue what this IW service is about, and 99% of the "disadvantages" that the dude in the video listed are all inferred, not based on fact (as far as I can tell). Sure, I do really hope that the PC game won't turn into a DLC-fiasco that the console market has turned into, but it's way too early to assume that Infinity Ward is going to do that. Seriously, you've decided to boycott the game because of this? Why not wait till more details come out and then make a decision?

That being said, the video does raise some good points regarding the dedicated servers. At this point all we can do is pray that IW won't mess things up. Then again, it will also be in IW's best interest to keep us PC gamers happy. So overall I think there's nothing to sweat about.

They have stated they will have DLC's and that PC will pay for them now. They have also stated that they will have ZERO mods and user created maps. Only what they make available. They have also stated that there will be ONLY a matchmaking system available thru IWnet and you have zero choice in what server specifically you play on.

They also said they made their decision and they will stick by it in using IWnet.

The ONLY consolation we have is the fact that they said, "We see the petition and are taking it very seriously." Whatever that means. Hopefully what it means is that they will have IWnet be the primary choice of all users, but at some point introduce a dedicated server option for the serious gamer. Even if they don't include mods and custom maps, at least dedicated servers you can label as "Pro East Coast" etc that have admins that can police the riff raff away.

Im pretty sure it is the same matching as Xbox Live . No dedicated servers there and just randomly put you with people unless you are in a party together.

Oh, I just heard that PC, Xbox, and Ps3 versions will only support 9v9 matches..

    Really though? 9v9?

Add that to the list of reasons NOT to buy it.

Xbox and PS3 were only 9v9 and that was only Ground War on CoD4. The regular size was 6v6 for regular games and Hardcore

But CoD was known for the medium to large scale battles. This is how they started, it should be the way they stay.

Call of duty was a PC game before a console game.

And not only was it PC before console, but WHY would you downgrade or degress at all? We made progress. Your game can hold 25v25 people matches if the dedicated server had the bandwidth. It's amazing. but you also have servers that do only 10v10 or less.

This picture BEST describes what I see in their decision. Not one reason to make their decision based on anything but financial greed. If you look at this spreadsheet, pretty much everything to do with not having dedicated servers is a downgrade and backwards motion. They are literally handicapping their game to hope it can make them more money in the long run.

I do have to admit it sucks to only play with a little amount of people. It kinda depends on the map size and everything though as well. The game I miss the most was Socom 2 for PS2 where you could make your own match with your own maps, weapons, and special features like no frags or pistols only. I have never played COD on PC just Xbox and PS3 so I dont really have much knowledge of it.
