Very interesting thread, thanks all for sharing.
@ Original thread - Yikes- rings of truthiness
- If I had done the things I did (while growing up both in the US and Franco's Spain,) during today's watchful eye of society's lack of permissiveness, I wouldn't be teaching at the university...I'd be in big trouble
I went to school in the 70's and I don't agree with fighting and bullying, I have always hated it when one kid picks on another and then physically harms him so I agree with both kids being hauled into the office but they should always find out who is at fault and how started it and give them some severe counselling because not all kids shake hands and become mates - some thoughtful and kind and intelligent kids take 40 years to recover (or work out how the world really works) and all those years wasted could have been put to good use whereas the thug kid forgets about it a day later but usually doesn't ever have much to contribute to society because of the type of personality he has.
Being a bully is a attitude. Changing that attitude will make a better person. You don't change that attitude by giving them a time out or a happy meal.
I remember one time when I was in high school every day a big guy named Rick would come after me every day when I got off the school buss on my way home.
I was not big enough or strong enough to fight him with my fist so I finally tune a hickory stick and waited in ambush after getting off the school bus.
By the time I got done with his shin part of the legs he didn't come to school for two days. He never bothered me again.
When he graduated from school he became a Marine and was in the squad that guarded the White House and I became a submarine sailor.
So a little attitude adjustment worked out well for both of us.
All my father did was ask me why it took so long to break out the stick. He knew what the problem was and was just waiting for me to solve it.
The principle of the school new of the problem but like my dad waited until I solved the problem. Other kids in school new of the problem also and justed waited.
Once the problem was solved nobody said anything.
I mean nobody; Ricks parents, school officials or other students. It was done and over and we all got on with our lives.
