Society is sadly becoming this way, but only with the minority of individuals and I don't think video games are directly to blame, I would say some people are just messed up regardless.
Although I have to say that if these mentally unstable people are affected by video games in this way they should not be playing them and need to be stopped before they do go and harm someone or themselves.
