this might be a stupid question. but....

If i schedule a virus scan at lets say 3pm, but im logged off but the pc is still on, will it still run the scan? Or do i need to be logged in for it to happen.

Depending on the program, there should be configurable options. Most has it activated when you log on, should the time scheduled was missed. I know for corporate environment, the scanning is done from the server and this can happen at anytime so long as the machine is online (not necessary a user has logged on).

The whole point is to keep people off my computer by staying logged off when i'm not home, and i'm always doing stuff on it when i'm home.

Then set it to run during the time you are home and on the system; let it run in the background. That is unless you tried that and the program needs all your resources to run.

AVG professional. I guess i should do the obvious thing and just test it. Log in about 10 mins after the scan should have started and see if it started.

As you can tell by my specs, i dont think i could play games while a virus scan is running.

If you have set a password for your profile just press "CTRL ALT DELETE" then "lock this computer" all scheduled tasks and background applications will carry on running regardless and unwanted guests cannot log on whilst your away.
