Yah...how quickly they also forgot just how much of a DOG XP was when it was first released too!
XP was garbage until SP1 made sgnificant improvements in the core, and fixed many of the 1500 known bugs on RTM release. I remember how much bad press XP was recieving then too, and I was reminded of that when reading Vista's press, but it's funny how short some peoples memories are when it comes to OS bashing. The same people who bashed Vista all over Blog-Land, were the same people bashing XP for being simply LOUSY, but in their Vista bash blogs they were kneeling at the XP alter and offering it their 1st born, because it was now the BEST OS EVER DEVISED...

Thankfully Windows 7 is a huge leap forward compared to the earlier GUI OS from Microsoft. It is fast and lean, easy to use and pretty to look at.

In the early days of the GUI OS, the OS actually slowed down the programs running on it. People sometimes forget that an OS is just the framework for your programs to run on, and shouldn't impede any programs usage. :)

Vista failed basically for (IMO) the following reasons

1) It was rushed out of the door long before it was ready for prime time and installed on totally unsuitable hardware - giving users a not very pleasant experience.

2) Often computers were sold without an install disk so if you did get into trouble you really were left with just a brick. A lot of pre-installed installations also had a hidden 20 GB partition or so from which a recovery in theory could be made --however invariably this didn't work and effectively you had a wasted 20GB on your hard disk.

3) Pre-installed systems usually come with a whole load of "bloatware" so it was a double whammy -- you had an unsuitable OS which couldn't be optimized because you didn't have the OS install disk etc etc.

Now 2 years later Vista SP2 has appeared and of course tha hardware is better --even my humble laptop has a dual core T7250 processor with 4GB RAM.

VISTA SP2 actually isn't too horrible but once a product has got a bad image (whether rightly or wrongly) all you can do is to get rid of it ASAP and bring something else out.

Windows 7 is snappy and people seem to like what they've seen so far. Most of the mistakes have been learned -- and apparently it will even run OK on a 512MB Netbook. On a 1GB RAM netbook it works fine.

Of course we all have the install disks so we can tinker around and optiimize it -- this wasn't possible on a lot of OEM VISTA installs (no install disk given).

BTW in these "credit crunch days" if you ARE buying a new computer (although better value can be got by "rolling your own") you can always haggle for a RETAIL copy of the OS to be thrown in as well even if the system comes pre-installed. Most stores will gladly do that to make a sale.

Thanks for that mate. I think that most of the population of the UK probably agree with my view on the UK Gov right now. Bloody useless bunch of t**ts! They have basically turned our country into a police state where our freedoms of speech have been taken away in so many areas. They rip us off with so much in tax it's unreal. Now they are giving Banks loads of OUR money to help them out of their own mistakes!! Not to mention the illegal war AND occupation of Iraq! And YES, I AM a white British male that voted for these b*****ds! Never again! Please don't think that the UK public is the same as the so-called Government, because we are NOT! ( may be a few odd ones! ). Invade and occupy Iraq, but won't lift a finger when Israel blast hundreds of innocent people in Gaza!??
