Things are always there when you need them...

I have been helping people lately with their computers and I have been trying to set up a work bench so that I don"t have to use my hardware. Lo and behold, sitting next to the dumpster was this little gem.

A Gateway EV700 17" CRT monitor in perfect working condition. Just what I needed.

Well the universe certainly worked well in your favor there.

It's funny, this kind of reminds me of a couple of summers ago when I put my old Pentium 120 MHz system at the end of the driveway with a sign on it that said "FREE." Nobody wanted it!

We had a clear out at work a few months back, a whole bunch of Dell badged 24" flat screen Trinitron CRT's were going begging... and would you believe - nobody wanted them, a couple of years ago they were very sought after...

At this point any time that I find hardware laying around somewhere, I bring it home. I have cleaned up quite a few pieces in the past and was able to piece together a few systems for friend's children. Sometimes I sell them. However, I have also thought about donating a few systems to charity. Just waiting on parts.....

Nice, good luck there!

I tend to keep old computer parts. I also will take any and all old computers friends or family have because I don't care if they work. I scrap them for parts. That is how I got my server. I had some more or less functioning parts. A friends computer broke and they bought a new one. I got the old set (case and monitor). I am using the monitor as a second one, and those parts got scrapped for the server. I managed to put what I had together in a working (and apparently solid) computer.

I find it amusing (just because I can build them) that people will get rid of a computer because it stopped working, never realizing that all it needed was new RAM or a new CPU, or PSU, or HDD. Instead they go buy a new one and throw the old one away.
So I keep them, and build things out of them! I also use old (broken) parts as a display for stuff, kind of generates interest.

So keep it, it tends to work!
