Should I get the "Extended Warranty" on my Dell Laptop?

    Hi there,

I'm contemplating buying the new Alienware M11X ultraportable laptop on the Dell website Alienware M11x Review - Review - at IGN and it comes with the standard 1 Year Limited Warranty w/1 Year Next Business Day On-site Service.

Just wondering If an extended 2 or 3 year warranty would be worth it ? I've owned another laptop in the past and currently I'm on my second one, I've owned my first one for over a year and my current one I've owned for about 6 months now. I've never had any problems with them and went with the standard 1 year warranty for both of them.

Really, is it really worth it ?

    Thanks

Personally NO (that's a capital na with capital ow)
I took out an extended warranty with Dell as a test for the company I work for on 2 laptops. Biggest waste of money ever. After spending 2 hours on the phone trying to get a technician to come out and change a dead motherboard, he came 2 days later (we had the 4hour turnaround platinum warranty thingmybob warranty option) he then rocked up with the wrong replacement part.
2 weeks later he brought us a new laptop (with a dead keyboard) 4 weeks later we got a refund for the laptop (still waiting for the extra warranty money that we paid for) ... this happened in mid 2008

Wasn't it all those trumped up extended warrantys that help put CircutCity out of business?

I think it depends upon the cost of the extended warranty. Years ago, when I purchased a Dell under an Employee Purchase Program at work, when I went with a longer warranty I got discounted rates on the add-ons which I put into the computer at the time of purchase. At the time I went with a nice Radeon X800XT and a nice SoundBlaster sound card and larger capacity hard drive..so it was actually less expensive in my case based on what I was getting to get the 3 year warranty. Had I not wanted to upgrade the box, it would have cost more simply for the extended warranty.

    Hi

As the owner of 5 Dells some with the added protection and most without. I only found one occasion where it saved me money. Its expensive, and Dell has tightened up their policies.

    I wouldn't If I were you

If you buy with some Mastercards/Visas (Platinum, Gold, Mmber cards etc) some double standard warranty on large purchases.. might be something to look into

    On a laptop, probably not.

On other big ticket items - definitely! My extended warranty on my fridge paid back in aces when two major components sh*t themselves 2 months out from the end of the extended warranty. The fridge was 4 years, 10 months old and now it's like new again

I'm with Nina on this I take out extended warranty on my large electrical products washing machine, tumble dryer, fridge freezer and TV.

On those items it's been worth it I've had new replacement items when things have broken down and the repair couldn't be done.

I stopped taking them out on microwaves as you can buy them cheap enough now but I did end up with 2 microwaves because the repair man couldn't fix it so I got a new one and it turned out there was nothing wrong with the old one.

I took warranty out on my computer, which is a desktop so that's covered until 2011 and that is on-site repair or replace.
I've always had good service from the cover I've had on my appliances and they are usually here within 48 hours to do any fixes.

So in my opinion there are certain cases where it is worth doing, but that's me :)
