In the U.K you normally do half your sentence , that's if you keep a low profile and don't get into any trouble while doing your jail time. So if you killed someone the minimum "life sentence" is 15 years an you could be out in around 7-8 years and be on license for some time after that ( Same as parole.)

Its the same in India too. Anyway, most of the laws are still in the British Raj period
