This post wasn't there when I started typing my last one,
Looks like the owners manual for your motherboard is as usless as mine.
if I read this correct Tech ARP - SATA AHCI Mode AHCI is the enhanced mode so my guess is the SATA mode is in fact the IDE emulation mode.

That would be the end of that idea then as there's effectivley no IDE mode to enable?

I wonder out of curiosity if he had an IDE HDD he could use the "Primary IDE Master" option?

Yeah, his motherboard is like mine and has one (legacy) IDE controller built into it. My IDE hard drive shows up in that section of my BIOS.

not an IDE hard drive i can use i think my parents pc has an IDE one, so i guess ill just have to test it on the VM then hand it over to them

If it looks like a legitimate Microsoft CD I wouldn't sweat it too much. It might take a while but I think you could put the CD in your optical drive and scan it with your currently installed anti-virus app. If you can find out what the MD5 checksum is supposed to be for your version you could check that to see if it matches. If it matches then the odds are very good that it hasn't been altered in any way.
