Had a chat with HP the other day about my laptop...

So, I was thinking of starting to use my laptop as I want to be out of the house but with a computer but my laptop has Vista on it. First, I got it as a graduation gift, but it had XP MCE on it first but HP replaced it for free because of all the problems with it (overheating, battery not charging, etc). So, long story short it's only got 1gb of RAM on it and Vista. I've wiped the drive and did a fresh install when I got it and uninstalled the bloatware they put on it, but it's still really slow. The chat I had with them was if they offered a downgrade to XP on it and they said no. Then I asked if they had the drivers for my model for XP, again they said we don't suggest you downgrade to XP it could break the system.

Now, does anyone think this will happen because I need a laptop but it's so damn slow you can't do **** on it. Should I try getting XP on it or upgrade the memory in it and just deal with Vista on it?

I don't see how putting XP on it could "break" it.

That's what I thought. I guess I'll give it a try, just need to figure out how to slipstream SATA drivers into my install cd, something to do yay!

I still might upgrade the memory, as 1gb is nothing nowadays. To bad it only supports up to 2gb

They're like some of the drivers and features of the computer might not work in XP. I mean come on, does anyone actually use those quick keys on the computer anyways? I'm sure that's what they were talking about and there's got to be something out on the internet to get it working, right?

How long's your warranty got left? Honestly, you'll get better software support right here. You can get a 2GB SO-DIMM for under $20 delivered (at least here in th US), put Windows 7 RC1 on it and be better off than either Vista or XP for about a year for essentially free. I'd go that route personally because I just can't stand to use any other OS anymore after using 7 for so long. I was even impressed at how bland and "uncool" OSX looked again after not having touched it in several months.

Well, we were supposed to send my old laptop back when we got the replacement but we never did as we wanted to see if any problems came up on the new one. After about a year HP never asked for it and we still got both LOL, but the old one is def. fried now.

So, we're not on good terms with HP I don't think.

So, I guess I will go ahead and get 2x 1gb memory sticks, I've only got 512's in here now. Anyone think W7 RC1 will run fine on it? It's a AMD Turion Mobile 64, 1gb (well 2gb soon) RAM, nVidia Geforce XXX graphics (need to check on that), and a 120gb hard drive. Oh, and Broadcom BCM4311 wifi lol.

2 Gigs is heaps for XP. I recently replaced Vista with XP on a HP laptop and it runs fine with 512mb. Being new to fooling around with laptops, i was surprised at the great driver support and quality of manuals available at the HP site.
    Good luck.

It's got two 512's, so 1gb. I'm testing out XP on it now and see how good it runs.
