This is Frightening Big Brother is Watching You

Hi all
Looking at the Pirate Bay saga I started doing a little checking at what actually goes out over the Net from a Router etc.

it's actually AMAZING what information is transmitted over the Internet

Try this for example (I know it says Please wait - but it will start the "Privacy Test").

Please wait...

Of course the sheer volume of information does tend to make this stuff hard to trap but if you are the Police / FBI etc etc with the resources to do it
well .

Gives a tracing via all the "Hops" as well

For example
Hop (ms) (ms) (ms) IP Address Host name
1 7 4 4 192.168.255.1 -
2 7 6 7 67.222.132.1 router.dfw-datacenter.com
3 10 9 16 72.249.134.177 -
4 13 6 7 8.9.232.73 xe-5-3-0.edge3.dallas1.level3.net
5 8 17 18 4.68.19.254 vlan99.csw4.dallas1.level3.net
6 22 16 17 4.69.136.149 ae-92-92.ebr2.dallas1.level3.net

In the UK, ISP's are forced by the Government to perform Deep Packet Inspection - since a week a go Monday.

The privacy test did say this tho. , which I suppose is a good thing:

18 Timed out Timed out Timed out
19 Timed out Timed out Timed out
20 Timed out Timed out Timed out
21 Timed out Timed out Timed out -

Trace aborted.

Checking who manages your IP address:

whois query for xxxxxxxxxx

Query error: Connection refused

Did the Shield's Up way back.

Handy for checking your firewall settings, but doesn't stop what the Privacy test reveals.

I never said how many pets he had although google earth did show that he had a load of landscaping gravel delivered last month. I didn't see any doghouses in the backyard or kitties on the windowsills

Seriously though, IP addresses may change and it takes a warrant to get the DHCP logs, but MAC addresses are generally persistent. That's why you make sure to change them around, if possible, when you're doing something you need privacy for. Just an example, a very large but un-named cable internet provider can map your MAC to your subscriber location using a feature of their network known as addressable taps. Cable companies frequently use contractors to install and maintain service endpoints. Those contractors need that MAC-to-tap information and they change contractors frequently so you can get the MAC-to-tap mapping with a simple call to the cable NOC if you know what and how to ask for it. No ID required

My Linux box handles the actual Internet connection so I would expect to pass this test.

Still amazing how much info is potentially available to people on the Internet.

No wonder both the "Good" and "Bad" guys pay HUGELY for expertise in this area.

Cheers

The information available on the internet often provides you with enough detail to sound convincing thus opening the door for a little, as Kevin Mitnick calls it, "social engineering". As for the good guys paying "hugely" for expertise, you can feel free to send them my way. They just don't seem to be hiring right now.
