I try to avoid tallying up the cash I've dumped into the rig in my specs. If I started out with the RAM, there's at least $400.00 right there. I got those OCZ platinum modules when they first hit the market. They were a hundred bucks a pop. This is where I like to stop, because I don't really want to go further....LOL

Software is even worse than the hardware. I don't even want to go there.

I believe I payed $650 for my original rig. Since then, I have added $40 in RAM, $160 in hard drives, $20 for a wireless card, $20 for a video card, and about $50 in other expenses (cables, a RAID card, a webcam etc).

I've gotten a lot of my hardware for free. I use old 17" CRT monitors, kindly "donated" to me by friends and picked up by the side of the road. Someone gave me a SATA CD burner, and I have numerous IDE hard drives laying around.

Yeah, I have become quite happy in the days here of open source and freeware software. I am 100% legit on my computers and the only thing that I use that is paid for licensing is Windows and Acronis True Image. And I've started using Macrium Reflect Free and EaseUsToDo (which are both free alternatives to Acronis) lately, so I probably won't have a need to upgrade or pay more for Acronis in the future.

With mine around $1450.00 with about $400.00 of it being just the video card and the SATA BDRW. Now this is for everything listed in my specs except the over priced Bose headphones which I got as a present. Fabe

I had some of the parts on hand, and moved my monitors from the older rig to the new... Into this one around US $2500, or thereabouts. I try not to dwell on it, to be terribly honest.

    Hard, diligent work.

It's also a matter of priorities. A high performance machine is worth more to some people than others.
