This is really bad... this is why we should stop using Oil and find another way of powering our machines...
    Hi all.

Nearly EVERBODY says we should stop using Oil and there isn't a huge amount of disagreement in that-- but NOBODY has come up with any SENSIBLE and cost effective alternative yet that is even REALISABLY practical for several DECADES to come..
Well hopefully something can be done now it's opened a lot of people's eyes to how much oil does/can damage the Earth, and also how much countries depend on oil. Alternatives at the moment is electricity, but in essence all you're doing there is plugging a car in to a wall, which is connected to a coal factory, so you're just changing which hand is doing the jerking.

LPG is probably the best alternative, apart from the fact a conversion costs around £2,000, but fuel price is about 60 pence a litre, so something will needed to be done to sort out the initial conversion.

This spill has caused BP the best part of a years worth of profits, so fuel prices are going to rocket up even more.

It is appalling that we as the consumers are ending up to foot the bill for their mistakes. Maybe we should boycott BP - that has helped a few years ago with Shell when they wanted to sink a defunct platform in the North Sea. They had to give in and properly disassemble it.

    Hi there.

I remember the Furore about that problem -- in fact the ORIGINAL Idea Shell had of allowing the platform to just sink into the North Sea turned out in the end to be by far the best solution of all - (other than those ideas of not having any exploration of the North Sea whatsoever).

Gasoline (Petrol) costs are HUGELY exacerbated by the TAX governments add on to it.

In the UK SHELL are actually one of the largest supplier of SANDWICHES in the UK due to thier HUGE network of Gasoline / Service stations -- selling Gasoline isn't actually that profitable for most Oil Companies in Europe due to the almost unbelievably high taxes on it.

If we really stopped using Gasoline at the moment a HUGE amount of Government revenue would dry up immediately -- where would the replacement come from.

I'm not going to turn this thread into an argument about supplying people with funds for Social Services, Education, Health services and the like -- but just to remind people that fuel taxes are a HUGE amount of any governments income without which a Country would just have to shut up shop on almost any public service.

As I've re-iterated in this thread we DO need to find alternatives to OIL but its NOT going to happen any time soon.

Anybody who thinks the solution is to tax the Oil Companies out of existence is just living in Cloud Cuckoo Land.

BP actually isn't the culprit here -- the REAL culprit is the "Out sourcing" culture that pervades modern businesses -- as I'm sure thousands of you guys currently working in the IT industry realize only too well. Businesses should run their CORE businesses themselves.

Had BP been operating the rig itself I'm 99.999999% sure this disaster wouldn't have happened.

Using a 3rd party outsourced solution shows what can happen when using a "cheaper" alternative.

Loads of customers having to deal with Off shored Indian Call Centres and "IT service" centres know EXACTLY what I mean here -- Not only is the customer service experience radically worsened but the cost savings aren't realised either.

    Cheers

That is actually a good point. But at the end it is BP that is to blame because they were cutting corners and lacked supervision in order to cut costs.

Hi WHS -- I think we can actually agree on this -- anyway I've said my piece on this thread now - and I'm sure I'm not the only one who has worked in the Oil Biz -- and it really isn't as evil as a lot of people appear to say it is.

LOL BP is a ficticious business entity. As such pays no taxes or suffers no loss of profit. Those are mearly expenses and passed directly to the consumer in the form of higher prices and employees in the form or lower compensation.

Like all companies partcularly publicly traded ones they are either profitable which benifits employees and SHARE HOLDERS ( you and me) or they are not which means the company must restructure to be profitable.

So if not "we" the consumer on whos behalf the oil is drilled and refined, who extactly ( with money of thier own) do you think should pay? ( hint, there is not anybody else) The buck stops with you.

To reject and be offended by an opposing view is pretty dogmatic in itself.
    It is.

I've just had it up to the eye teeth of <insert whatever belief/cause/race> automatically playing the offended card simply because of some so-called sense of moral entitlement.

I thought I'd get in first to see what it feels like for a change. Quite frankly, I did not care for the sensation.

To be honest, it's impossible to tell from the tone, but that 'offensive' remark I made wasn't entirely serious. More of a barbed tongue in cheek comment. Broadly aimed at an undefined foes.

The fact is, everybody is offended by something. But not everybody makes a song and dance about it. Those that do should not be taken seriously.

(It was remiss on my part to allow a message to be so easily misconstrued and choose an inadequate time and place to do so)
