    advice for a friend

A friend needs advice picking a college major. Here is a message he sent me:

I'm still having trouble decide on what to major in. Either math or information technology. I want to learn all about cryptography and the math behind the algorithms. However, I don't want to double major. I dont think I can create a new special major just for myself...

I think he answered his own question:
I want to learn all about cryptography and the math behind the algorithms
    It has to be math.

Agreed, if it's an either/or then it has to be Math in his case with his emphasis on cryptography too.

Some British universities offer degrees in "Independent Studies" where you can pick'n'mix courses from different disciplines as long as you can get an exam board to agree to it.
That would be handy for your friend:)

If it is an option at his school, he could major in the Information Tech, and minor in math... He could also go for another year and get the math.
